This Advent season has me thinking a lot about John the Baptist.  Yes, I’m aware that Advent points us to Christmas and Jesus, not John the Baptist.  But that’s actually what has led me to think so much about John the Baptist – John knew it was all about pointing to Jesus, not to himself.  John the Baptist was the one preparing the way of the Lord, the voice in the wilderness, the one who said, “He must increase.  I must decrease.”

John the Baptist’s humility reminded me of a conversation I had last year with my son Jack.

Jack: We talked about humble at church this morning.

Me: What does it mean – “humble”???

Jack: It’s like when you hear that someone is giving away free cookies, but you let everyone else get in line in front of you so they can get one before you.

Me: …speechless
